  What a bunch of Turkeys

A Thanksgiving story, read Marya's version here.

At the last minute (Monday night to be exact) I started thinking about bailing on our Thanksgiving plans. We had plans to join some good friend up north, but I chickened out at the last moment. Reasons include: worrying about what my emotional state of being would be on the first Thanksgiving without my brother, wanting to use the time to catch up on work and get more packing done, starting to feel like I could be coming down with something, general laziness, and feeling like being mellow instead. Are those reasons or excuses? What’s the difference?

Tuesday night, the bailing out phone calls were made and the new Turkey Day plans turned into: sleeping in, going for a long hike in Montana de Oro State Park, and trying to find an open restaurant for dinner. We were invited to join Marya and her family for dinner, but we decided to stick with the hiking plans. Besides, this is turning into a tradition for us now. Last year we went backpacking over Christmas, this year hiking on Thanksgiving. Sounds good, one of the two major holidays is spent in the mountains each year. No offense Family, we do love you!

As we drove into the state park and took in the beautiful ocean and trees, I told Bret I was so looking forward to our hike. A few minutes later we were gathering our belongings, and Bret started to put his keys in my backpack. I told him to just take off the car key – I didn’t want those clunky things in my backpack – they weighed at least 5 pounds, ok, maybe 2, but still! We started out for the trail, but realized he forgot something in the car. He took out the key and realized it was his car key, he had forgotten that we were driving MY CAR!!!! Spacey Bitch!

Fuck! We were screwed! We quickly started scanning our brains for solutions to this problem – we were locked out of the car, in the park, on Thanksgiving!

Solution: Let’s call Todd (Bret’s brother)
Problem: Our cell phones are in the car and we don’t have any money plus Todd is going to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving and is probably not home

Solution: Break into the car or break a window
Problem: I didn’t really want to do that

Solution: Marya is in Los Osos at her mom’s house and she has my house keys which would allow us to get into my house to get my car keys
Problem: I don’t have Marya’s cell phone number memorized

Solution: Walk or hitch a ride to Marya’s mom’s house
Problem: Long walk, but there are no other solutions.

Thank goodness Marya’s mom lived nearby and I knew the general area – although I couldn’t think of the Street name although I had just addressed her “Save the Date” card – Darn…. We ended up hitching a ride with some cool mountain bikers into town and then walked around the neighborhood for a while until we found the house. We had been invited over earlier, and I knew they wouldn’t mind us showing up – but I did feel a little embarrassed about arriving at the house unannounced during Thanksgiving dinner.

We did happen to arrive a few minutes after they had sat down for dinner. It ended up being a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner (after I got over the embarrassment of wearing a tie die tee shirt with my leggings at Thanksgiving dinner), I think it was all meant to be. And the food was sooooo good – Thanks Momdot! I can’t wait to have that second piece of pumpkin pie later tonight during the Apprentice. I love Marya’s family and we all had a great time catching up, laughing and talking about who was going to win the Biggest Looser. To top it all off, we ended up taking this killer walk around the bay and saw an amazing sunset.

The Light at the end of the Tunnel

We booked a caterer and a photographer and I'm actually excited about my wedding again. I think it's all downhill from here. What else is really left to do? Not much. Yeah right. There are still a million things left to do...but for now, all is well.

I'm lucky enough to have two friends that got married last year (both weddings I was in) so I call on them for advice often. After about the fifth email I received from a caterer telling me they were booked on my wedding date, I called Krissy in a state of panic. I was starting to realize that my wedding day wasn't going to be what I envisioned, but somewhere between what was available and what I could afford. Fish and chips anyone?

I told her my realization as I was driving to work and she told me, "yeah, that's exactly what it is". She went on to tell me that she wanted sushi served at the Japanese Friendship gardens where she got married and a few other things that didn't happen for various reasons.

I'm just excited that we have someone booked for the day of our wedding that will bring some sort of food, that still needs to be decided, but who cares. Those are minor details. We didn't actually sample any of the food from the caterer yet, but we liked the guy. He got married at the Monday Club and his parents got married there too. I think it's a sign.

The Bird Flu isn't as dangerous as I thought and my wedding is starting to come together. Things are looking up.
Welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures on the Central Coast. Click here if you would like to email me.
