Last Week
I had such a great week last week. Tuesday night I made dinner for Bret and Marya while they practiced playing guitar and singing in my living room. It was so great to have live music playing while cooking dinner. I love hearing them play together as well. After dinner we walked downtown to Linnea's where there were two bands playing outside. I've heard several bands at Linnea's but never outside. The outside patio is one of the greatest spots in SLO. There is a fish pond and plants everywhere. Part of the patio is covered and vines go over the top. They had lights up too. We got the best seats in the house, way in the back next to the pond. So fun!!
Thursday night Robin (a friend from work who just moved up here from LA) had Marya, Tricia and I over for dinner and bead making at her new place. It was so great. Robin makes the most beautiful jewelry. I happen to have three of her necklaces, some earrings and a bracelet that I love!! She opened up her entire collection to us and told us to go to town. I made a bracelet and started to make a sun catcher but saw what Tricia was doing and suddenly realized I hated mine so took it apart and put all the beads back. My bracelet turned out pretty good but that's because Robin stepped in as Art Director and told me to add some dark beads in. When I look at the bracelet it is clear that without those dark beads it wouldn't look as nice. Thanks Robin! We also got to meet her cats, Marcello and Jamacia.
Friday morning around 8 am, Carrie had her baby. Marya and I went and visited her shortly after. We weren't sure if it was too soon afterwards, but Carrie told us later that it wasn't. What is the proper amount of time you should give a mother after she has her baby? Maybe it depends, but it would be nice to know with so many people having babies lately. Carrie was in labor all night, but we saw her two hours after it was all over and she looked great. Marya posted some
pictures to her blog. We got to hold little Ranier on his "birth day". What a way to brighten the day. Carrie and Ranier left the hospital today and both are doing well. What a beautiful baby. Speaking of beautiful babies, Carolyn had a baby girl last week. I think Bret and I might go visit next weekend.
Mom
Mom and I had a great weekend in
Santa Monica last weekend. We have such a great time exploring the town and wandering in fancy shops, being silly and hanging out at coffee shops talking and catching up. I found
The Bayside Hotel last February when Bret and I met Geoff in John in LA to see the
Phish concert. The hotel is across from the ocean and boardwalk and within walking distance of the pier (with restaurants and small amusement park - very "East Coast" says Mum) and
The Third Street Promenade. Mom and I met here for Mother's Day last year and had the most wonderful weekend. It's a great place to meet because it is about half way for both of us so we get to spend more time with each other and less time driving. There is also so much to do around that area that it makes for a perfect weekend.
Here are some of our favorite activities:
- Shopping, shopping, shopping - We love to go shopping on Main Street and Montana Avenue. Unfortunately it's only window shopping because the prices are out of this word. We did manage to find some Dansko Shoes that were on sale. We got matching clogs, how cute. That is a super fun site to browse around by the way. I had no idea there were so many styles of Dansko shoes.
- Rent bikes and ride along the Boardwalk
- Hang out at Shutters, the hotel we wish were staying at. Shutters is just around the corner from Bayside Cafe and a favorite hang out during our weekend stay. We love eating breakfast in the Pedals Cafe right on the boardwalk, hanging out in the lobby next to a fireplace sipping on Shirley Temples and looking at all the fancy people. Too bad $395 a night is a little out of our price range.
- Go to the Farmers market on Main Street after getting coffee. The coffee shop we like to go to is right next to a parking lot where they bring homeless pets on Sunday mornings. We always stop and talk to the doggies and kitties.
- Yoga. I decided to look into a Yoga studio on this last trip. We went to the 9:15 class on Saturday morning. Both Mom and I agree that it was one of the best Yoga classes we'd ever been too. Besides Trina's classes. We loved it. It was also our first time doing Yoga together.
I was inspired to write something about my mom after reading this article,
Mom Finds Out About Blog. I started thinking about how there wasn't really anything on my blog that I wouldn't want my mom to see. She did read my blog once and said that I hadn't mentioned anything about her. Well now you have your own blog entry dedicated to you Mom. You're the best!!
Overheard
M, is it ok if I use this phrase?? Speaking of M, I haven't told you about her daily distractions. Marya is posting daily distractions for people like me who work a lot and need a break in the day to look at something fun. I even have my very own
dedicated daily distraction that was posted for me that other day. You should check them out. Thanks M!
Anyway, I had to post this:
KB: I think I hit the wall
Kurt: Are you hurt?
KB: Yes...I broke my concentration
It's Raining on Bungle
Bungle is Bret's neighbor's cat. She is an old cat who can turn from nice to mean in a second but is also very starved of attention. Her owner isn't home very much so she spends most of her time outside wishing she could be in Bret's house. There was a time where Bret let her in his house but then Ted, Todd's cat moved in and established himself as King of the House and didn't allow Bungle inside. Now Ted is gone but Bret doesn't really want Bungle in the house because of fleas. I have been known to give him a hard time about this.
It's been raining all day. Tonight Bret and I were walking home from a movie and we passed by Bungle and I shot him this look of "Poor Bungle, it's your fault she's cold and alone". Five minutes later I was sitting on Bret's bed and noticed there was dirt on the bed. I asked him where that came from and he said, "BUNGLE"!! We laughed and laughed. I guess I shouldn't push for the Bungle adoption.
That's the only thing about a cat that goes indoors and outdoors. They bring in lots of dirt, fleas and sometimes dead animals. Poor Momma has been dying to go outside today. Maybe I'll let her go play tomorrow. I was warned that there might be rats around our apartments. Maggie spotted one. Momma isn't much of a rodent killer. At least she hasn't ever brought me any rodents.
One night when I first moved into my apartment I was sitting on my couch and I heard these noises on my porch. Light banging and squeeking noises. I thought maybe it was a wounded animal and I was scared to open my door and have some bloody possum run in or something. I knew Bret was on his way over so I waited til he got home and made him go outside and look. As soon as he opened the door I saw a huge rat and I screamed. He screamed too and said, "what?" Then he saw the rat and let out a big sigh of relief. He says, "Oh, I thought it was a spider." I love that story.
